When it comes to healthy eating, Berlin has the most choice out of any city I have been to bar LA. When you ask if a café serves none-dairy milk, the answer (nine times out of ten) is yes! Often with a quizzical look as to why you would even ask!?
You can easily find tasty goodies made from un-refined wheat and sugar. There are also lots of bio-marts and supermarkets that sell all of the hard to find ingredients listed in healthy recipes.
So when I’m looking for a delicious organic smoothie or a bowl bursting with superfoods I rarely struggle. Here are some of my favourite healthy eating places in Berlin …
Lokal – The food here is perhaps not healthy in a ‘raw food bowl’ kind of way. But, it is a farm to table restaurant with completely fresh and organic produce. I’m talking delicious natural wines, heavenly local ingredients and a menu that changes weekly based on what’s currently in season. It has a wonderfully warm atmosphere with friendly staff too. OMG it’s so good. I love going here for special evenings out. Be sure to book as it gets very busy.
Holy Flat – Holy Flat is a great little lunch spot with South American and European inspired healthy bowls and flatbreads. Everything I’ve tried here has been flavorsome and nutritious. There is a huge hand painted mural of a Stag on the wall here which is fun and the last time I went they were playing some pretty trippy music too.
Liquid Garden– This sweet little place specialises in healthy green smoothies. With the staff concentrating on just smoothies, it means that they are uber knowledgeable in that field and maintain a high standard of tasty drinks- which isn’t always a given. I like going here because it’s decorated with funky wallpaper and plants, they play cool music and it’s situated in Prenzlauer Berg- one of my favourite neighborhoods in Berlin with lots of cute cafes and shops to explore.
Goodies– Goodies is like a fast food takeaway but everything there is good for you. Every little detail has been considered, they use sustainable energy and the packaging is compostable. I love the labeling system which tells you the properties of each item. So whether you are vegan, gluten free, cutting out refined sugar or simply looking for a tasty treat that’s good for you, you will be able to find something here. I love getting a Berry Bang smoothie and superfood porridge to go.
The Bowl – This is one of my go-to clean eating spots in Berlin. It has super sleek décor that reminds me of lunch spots in LA. It’s a nice place to eat both in the evening and during the day. I love the roasted brussel sprouts with cashew cheese and the sweet potato fries with organic ketchup. There is a great vegan supermarket below it called Veganz and a Goodies too (see above). The service can be a bit hit and miss, and you can’t book a table in the evening so you often have to wait, particularly at weekends but the food is great.
Let me know if you have any suggestions too because I’m always looking for new places to try!
